finding a job in Vancouver

The second most important step after finding a place to live is to find a job. Before you get a job you need to get a SIN (Social Insurance Number), which allows you to work legally in Canada. You can do that by going to Service Canada Office . The procedure is easy, but don’t forget to take your passport and a work permit with you!

After you will get a SIN (or even before that), it is a good idea to open a bank account. Employers needs it to pay you the money you have earned. There are a lot of banks to choose from: Bank of Montreal (BMO), Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank), Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) and so on. They all gives almost the same for new customers for a very similar price. Try to google which best fits to you (according the price and the location). Don’t forget to take your passport and work permit with yourself! It usually takes about 7-14 days to get your bank card to your mail box.

CV (Curiculum Vitae) doesn’t work in Canada. You have to prepare your resume. Google for the forms of resume. If you are applying to different positions, adjust each resume to the position you are applying for. It is a good idea to prepare a cover letter too. Many companies have their own forms to fill online if you are applying for a job. Sometimes it lasts quite a long time to fill them out.

If you are looking a job in Customer Service field – the best idea is to print many copies of your resume and to bring it to the places you are interested in working at. If you are interested in working in another sphere – try to look for job advertisements in Craigslist, Indeed and the other websites.

Finding a job is not always easy. So be prepared to send resume to dozens of companies. Some of them will not even read your email because it might go to the Junk box. While some of them will get it, read it and might invite you to the job interview. Friends/people you know might also help you. It is much easier to find a job if a person you know works there and works good. The employer will hope the same from the person recommended.
